Branford Marsalis Quartet Brings Fresh and Fiery Jazz to Stephens Auditorium
Thursday, October 18, 2012

One of the most innovative and forward-thinking jazz ensembles today, the Branford Marsalis Quartet is coming to Stephens Auditorium on Sunday, November 11 at 7:30 p.m., with what promises to be a fresh and fiery performance. Live jazz doesn’t get any livelier than this quartet, led by the three-time Grammy Award®-winner, saxophonist and Tony Award® nominee, Branford Marsalis. Marsalis is known by millions for his work on the Tonight Show and for his collaborations with Sting, Harry Connick, Jr. and many others.
Marsalis continues to exercise and expand his skills as an instrumentalist, and as a composer and the head of Marsalis Music, the label he founded in 2002. At the label, he has produced both his own projects and those of the jazz world’s most promising new and established artists.
As a member of an incredibly distinguished musical family, Marsalis is also a frequent soloist with classical ensembles, and has appeared with the Boston Pops, the New York Philharmonic and the Chicago Symphony.
Marsalis recently released Songs of Mirth and Melancholy, a spectacular duo collaboration with his quartet’s longtime pianist, Joey Calderazzo.
With Marsalis on saxophone, Calderazzo on piano, Eric Revis on bass and Justin Faulkner on drums, this long-lived quartet’s Ames performance will be a winner for central Iowa jazz lovers.
