Heartland Senior Services Presents "Under the Big Top"
Friday, August 03, 2012

The circus is coming, the circus is coming! Yes, the Big Top is coming to Ames in the form of Heartland Senior Services’ 18th Annual Variety Show, whose theme this year is “Under the Big Top”! This yearly extravaganza features a circus of performers, seniors all over 60 years of age, representing 8 communities in Story County. Performance dates are Friday, August 17 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, August 19 at 2:00 p.m. in the Ames City Auditorium, 515 Clark Ave. Tickets are $10 for a General Admission seat in advance and $12 at the door. Reserved seat tickets are available at the Heartland office only for $14.
With “Under the Big Top” as its theme, the Variety Show will pay tribute to the days of chautauquas, revival meetings and the touring circuses that came to Ames. A Circus Barker, aka KASI’s Mel Crippen, and the music of a calliope and organ grinder will greet the audience as they arrive for the show. Inside, the stage will be decorated with a big top and the audience will be treated to a pre-show visual history of “big top” events in Ames created with the help of the Ames Historical Society.
The Variety Show is the largest fundraiser organized by Heartland, and the proceeds support the services and programs of Heartland Senior Services throughout Story County. Many businesses and organizations support the show through sponsorships and advertising. UnitedHealthcare is the premier sponsor this year. Even though the Variety Show is held in Ames, it has county-wide involvement and supports the agency’s county-wide services such as Nutrition, Adult Day Care and Outreach.
All tickets (general admission and reserved) are available at Heartland Senior Services, 205 S. Walnut, Ames, 515-233-2906 between 8 am and 4 pm, Monday through Friday.
