Climate

Ames takes pleasure in each of the four seasons, with activities and events to maximize each month’s beauty and fun. But you can be certain that the Midwestern hospitality is a constant all year round.

Current conditions:

Dressing for Iowa Weather

SPRING: (March, April and May)
Average Temperature
51 degrees

Spring unfolds as leaves emerge from the trees and flowers are back in bloom. The mild temperatures are perfect for enjoying all our trails or relaxing in the parks around town. But April showers do bring May flowers so make certain to have a combination of long- and short-sleeved shirts, sweaters, lightweight jackets and an umbrella.

SUMMER: (June, July and August)
Average Temperature
74 degrees

Summer warms up as people find themselves taking a refreshing swim in one of the area pools or grabbing a round of golf at an area course. But be prepared for high temperatures and humidity. Lightweight clothing like short-sleeved shirts, shorts, skirts, dresses and open-toed shoes or sandals are a must. And don’t forget your swimsuit!

AUTUMN: (September, October and November)
Average Temperature
54 degrees

Autumn brings the college back to life as football games and school activities move into full swing. Temperatures can vary greatly so layering your clothes is essential. Sweaters and long-sleeved shirts will keep you warm while tailgating but a medium-weight jacket might be necessary at night.

WINTER: (December, January and February)
Average Temperature
24 degrees

The winter snow and cooler temperatures beg for big hill sledding, cross country skiing and ice skating, whether you want to be inside or out. Make sure to have a warm hat, scarf and heavy coat when playing in any winter weather. Insulated gloves and boots will provide added protection and warmth in cold temperatures, wind and snow.
